Natural remedies to relieve trapped wind

Trapped wind can be incredibly uncomfortable and distracting.

However, you don’t just have to sit back and wait for the feeling to pass.

Rennie takes a look at some of natural remedies you can try to help put you back on track – many of which you may already have lurking in the back of your kitchen cupboard…

FENNEL SEEDS

Fennel is jam-packed with nutrients, anti-oxidants, fibre, minerals and vitamins.

The essential oil compounds found in the seeds have anti-oxidant, digestive and anti-flatulent benefits, making them helpful for trapped wind.

Possibly the only disadvantage are the distinctive flavour which, for many, is quite unpalatable. If you can stomach the taste though, chew and swallow a teaspoon when you are feeling bloated.

PEPPERMINT OIL

Cool, fresh and with a delicious smell, peppermint oil has natural antispasmodic properties (in other words, they prevent muscles from going into spasm). It naturally relaxes your sore muscles, helping to prevent the painful stomach spasms caused by trapped wind.

PEPPERMINT TEA

If you don’t have peppermint oil to hand, or if you suffer regularly, peppermint tea offers a warm and effective alternative to sip on. After a meal it also works as a perfect, soothing palette cleanser.

GINGER

Like mint, ginger can also prevent stomach muscles from going into spasm. Available in capsules, candied or drunk as a tea, ginger is a really warming option – perfect for sipping on during the long winter evenings.

HOW TO LIMIT THE CHANCES OF GETTING TRAPPED WIND IN THE FIRST PLACE

Of course, prevention is better than cure. Eating a fire-rich diet, ensuring you drink plenty of water and take regular exercise can help improve your bowl function and make getting trapped wind less likely.

Equally, there are foods that are well-known to cause wind and bloating such as:

  • sprouts
  • cauliflower
  • beans
  • broccoli
  • onions
  • cabbage

However, it is vital to ensure you maintain a healthy diet full of fruit and vegetables.

If you find yourself suffering from trapped wind however, Rennie Deflatine is always on hand to provide quick and effective relief.

It works by gently dispersing the bubbles of gas that cause the embarrassing symptoms of trapped wind, such as bloating, gurgling and flatulence.

Ensure you try a variety of different options and techniques to find which works best for you and, if trapped wind is a common occurrence, then consult with your doctor who can offer expert advice for your situation.
