Breakfast is widely regarded as the most important meal of the day - but many of us skip it because we'd rather push the snooze button and have an extra five minutes in bed.

However, just because your morning routine is more rushed than relaxed, doesn’t mean you can’t have a healthy breakfast.

A fruit and vegetable smoothie

Unless you have been living under a rock the past decade, the smoothie health craze won’t have escaped your attention. Making up a batch at the start of the day or even the night before, and storing in the fridge is a great way to get your day off to a healthy start.
If you suffer from heartburn or indigestion, then try to avoid putting acidic fruits such as oranges or lemons into your drink and focus more alkaline ingredients such as vegetables, including broccoli, celery, mushrooms and fruits like bananas.

As for the taste? There are no set rules, so experiment with a variety of options until you find something that’s right for you! There are classic combinations like strawberry and banana or apple and mango but a firm favourite due to its nutritionalbenefits is green smoothies. Green smoothies are packed full of nutrients and antioxidants that boost your energy.

Strawberry and Kiwi Smoothies

Here’s the ingredient list for our favourite green smoothie you can try at home;

  • Greens (kale or spinach)
  • Cucumber
  • Celery
  • Banana
  • Strawberry or Blueberries
  • Water and some ice to chill

Try changing up the ingredient keep your smoothies new and exciting and prevent smoothie boredom. For an extra superfood boost, try adding chia seeds, flax seeds or some coconut flakes.

Easy overnight oats

Overnight oatmeal is a quick and easy way to have a health nutritious breakfast and stay those extra five minutes in bed. It only takes a few minutes to prepare, simply fill a container the list of ingredients, cover, refrigerate overnight and serve in the morning.

  • Skim milk or vanilla almond milk
  • Non-fat Greek yoghurt
  • Honey
  • Vanilla
  • Rolled oats
  • Your choice of fruit

There’s plenty of inspiration to be had out there so don’t feel confined by what we consider ‘traditional’ breakfast foods. Experiment and see what works for you to ensure you get your day off to the best possible start.
