Heartburn

The most common symptoms of heartburn are:

  • A burning sensation in your chest or throat after eating
  • A hot, sour or salty tasting fluid in the back of your throat and difficulty swallowing

What is Heartburn?

Heartburn is an unpleasant condition that occurs when acid from the stomach rises up into the oesophagus (food pipe) and the throat where it causes a burning pain.

Heartburn is one of the most common symptoms of GORD - gastro- oesophagael reflux disease. GORD is not a serious condition but heartburn can damage the lining of the oesophagus and cause reflux oesophagitis.

The pain of heartburn can last for several hours or more and is often made worse by eating.

Many people suffer sleepless nights as a result of heartburn because lying down can trigger the condition and increase the pain.

Symptoms of Heartburn

The main symptoms of heartburn are a burning pain in the chest, just behind the breastbone, and an acid taste at the back of the throat. Some people feel the pain of heartburn deep within their chest, nearer the back, and others experience pain or discomfort when swallowing.

If you have any of the following symptoms the cause could be heartburn:

  • Burning pain in the chest.
  • Burning pain in the stomach.
  • Burning sensation in the throat.
  • Hot, sour, acidic or salty tasting fluid in the back of the throat.
  • Difficulty swallowing.
  • Feeling of food sticking in the throat or chest.

Heartburn can be easy to treat with an antacid remedy like Rennie® Peppermint, Spearmint and Rennie® Sugar Free *. However, if any of these symptoms are severe or prolonged, you should consult a doctor or pharmacist.

Frequently asked questions

  • Is there really a difference between indigestion and heartburn?

Although the two are often confused, technically there is a difference. Whilst indigestion is largely confined to the stomach, heartburn describes the pain of acid reflux in the oesophagus (food pipe), not always present with indigestion.

  • How much Rennie® should I take?

The usual dose is 1-2 tablets up to three times daily. This gives a maximum daily dose of 6 tablets. For more information, read the package leaflet and ask your doctor or pharmacist.

  • When would it be better for me to see a doctor?

If you have persistent discomfort or warning symptoms (weight loss, difficulty swallowing, constant discomfort in the gastrointestinal region, persistent or blood-tinged vomiting, black stools), you should definitely see a doctor.

Always read the label. If symptoms are severe or prolonged, you should consult a doctor or pharmacist.
If you are pregnant, medicines can affect the unborn baby. Always talk to your doctor or pharmacist before taking any medicine during pregnancy.
